Battery questions

Recommended Posts

I charge and use all my batteries. Quite often I will need to change batteries during the day especially when the camera is draining power fast. This happens when you have a lens with Image Stabiliser (VR) attached, or are using continuous focus mode or when you have to leave the camera on for grab shots.

So - definitely have at least one backup battery and I would say all of them.

I would keep all three charged and rotate them. From what I've read these lithium ion batteries can be charged hundreds of times without any damage. They are more likely to lose the ability to hold a charge over time, not because of the number of times they are charged. I charge my batteries after each use (unless I've only shot a few shots). You should also charge them if they haven't been used for a couple of months.

Some batteries have "memory" and need to be fully discharged and recharged to keep their storage capacity at optimum levels. Good thing to know is that lithium ion batteries aren't like that. If I were storing a battery for a long time, I've heard that it's better stored discharged, but can't validate that. I agree with Mark's idea of rotating them and keeping them topped up.
