Richard Williams
The F5 is a much better tool in this situation. The F4 AF is marginal for action photography.
neal wells
While I agree about the F4 being my favorite camera, I have both and for action shooting the F5 is the clear choice.

rob_wall
As long as you do not need AF, the two cameras are equally capable.
User_276104
I agree that the F5 would be a better choice, but on the other hand the lens will be at infinity most of the time so the F4s would probably do OK.

What is it about the F5 that makes you lean toward the F4s, Lisa?
lisa_lowden
rob i dont understand your statement. eric i just like it better, it has knobs and levers and was more revolutionary when introduced. i am also known as ken rockwell, hehe. i guess if it was good enough for sports photog for 9 years its good enough for me. ll
lex_jenkins
Any camera with a motor drive is well suited to action photography. I used an F3HP with MD-4 motor drive and FM2N with MD-12 motor drive for several years to photograph action and school sports. The only limitation is how quickly you can manually focus.

With some action events autofocus is not essential, so there are fewer advantages to quick autofocus. Many racing events usually involve either panning, with relatively little change in distance between camera and subject; or using trap or zone focusing, prefocusing on a specific spot and waiting for the action to move into that zone.

If you prefer the F4 and either find the autofocus speed acceptable, or are comfortable with manual focus, go ahead and use it.

rob_wall
I meant that the AF on the F-4 is really slow. But beyond that it's just as good as the F-5.
lisa_lowden
and the winner is the f...5. it is all dressed up and somewhere to go. thks for the responses. ll
lisa_lowden
reason being on choosing f5 cause af is faster and its gonna be hot and sweaty and i will get a better grip on the camera and the f5 is lighter than the f4s which i have. i am great at run on sentences. ll
