Thanks, Rodeo Joe. I have a ton of Fuji slide film in the freezer and an equal amount of Fuji mailers (I guess they're still good at Dwayne's? It's been awhile.)

I'll have a look at cleaning that up.

I've heard about this place over the years, but haven't sent anything to them. I have an FT2 that could use a looking at - the meter needle flickers wildly whenever changing aperture.

http://lezot.com/nikkormat-nikomat-restoration-service/

I copied family slides a few years ago with a Nikon 105mm macro pointed down at a light table. This was pre-live view (D2x) and the hardest part was leaning over the camera for periods of time.

I'll just post another response with the photo of your camera and a comparison of a screen shot from the YouTube video...which I now realize still appear to have some basic differences.

I think I've exhausted my help here!

I can't seem to edit the second photo I posted to this response, but the FE you have is clearly missing some parts compared to the YouTube video link I posted. The photos I posted were actually of an FE2, but not being a repairman I didn't realize they would be so different inside.

Have you owned this camera for a long time, or just acquired it?

Here is a YouTube video of someone showing what to do. His camera is not actually jammed, just showing how to fix a jam.

Here it is un-engaged, ready for the film advance lever to rotate.

Remove the bottom plate and check if this little arm is engaged. When my FE2 did something like yours almost 20 years ago, a guy at a camera store opened it up, moved the arm away, and cocked the shutter..

When I first got into photography in 1997, the N8008/8008s bodies fetched a pretty high price used - I remember seeing them listed in KEH's big ads in Shutterbug for up to US$550. I think part of it was because Nikon left the DOF preview button off all but the top cameras for quite awhile.

Do I dare say this? I paid $200 for an N8008s with a data back in 2005.

"In other words, I look for the cheapest I can find, preferably about to be discontinued" - Sanford's initial comment

I couldn't agree more. I bought a D2x in 2006 for $4,500 (I obviously had money to burn, unlike now) and sold it before it became "worthless" in 2009 for $1,300. As an enthusiast, digital gear is not an "investment".

I kind of got back into film for awhile and next bought a new but discontinued D7000 in December 2014 from Amazon for $484, and I think it's still available there. I'll take an older model for roughly 1/3 the cost of the introductory price any day.
