dick roadnight cotswolds
The glassless neg holder would not consistently hold the tranny flat, and the glass one promises to support 70mm film, Xpan (65mm of 35 mm (24mm image width) film) panoramic and up to 6 x 17 roll film. It works... but it it is cheap and nasty at £80... I would have rather paid more for a quality product. Does not Nikon make a nice rotatable neg holder for £300? Polacolour insight supports it, but only up to 6 x 9 at the moment. I use the glass holder with SilverFast, but it is not set up for it. On the old software, if your negs have not got precisely the right spacing you have to position each neg before scanning, on the new you can preview a 6 x 24 strip and will be able to then select and 6 x 17 strip. Does anybody know any more ... like when we get a version of Silverfast that supports it?
fotografz
I recently got the film holder also. I was a bit suprized that the body of it was plastic rather than metal like the other holders. But I have an X-Pan, and until this item came along I was forced into scanning X-Pan film on my flatbed. They have you by the short hairs and the price reflects that. I'm currently using the latest version of Silverfast with NegaFix. To scan a X-Pan neg I have to select 6X9 and crop.
david_chilvers
Talking about silverfast, I downloaded a trial version(because it`s very expensive for the 8000)It obviously is a good product but just like vue scan It is more complicated than Nikons own software. When comparing scans from Silverfast vs Nikon they are not the same and maybe straight into PS silverfast has slightly more natural colours but to be quite honest once youv`e added levels and unsharp etc there isn`t much in it and certainly not enough to warrant the big outlay plus Nikon is so straight forward. psartman
Have you actually MADE a 6X17 scan? I investigated the new crop of medium format scanners about a year ago for use with 6X12 negs and was told by tech reps at Nikon, Minolta, AND Polaroid that the 6X9 limitation was mechanical, not software or firmware. It seems the sensor (or neg) is moved with a long worm screw. When it runs out of travel, that's it and no software update can change that. I'd be delighted to find out they were misinformed about their products.
dick roadnight cotswolds
"Have you actually MADE a 6X17 scan?" No, Paul... I had also heard that the limit was 69 - but perhaps the new software will scan and stitch?
tai_thittichai
like someone said before, considering that you are authoring your images electronically, it wouldn't be such a bad thing to simply place two halves of the same neg together in photoshop. i'm sure there would be no loss of quality, and i assume that the neg strip goes in lengthways? however, you're obviously after a complete solution.
