bueh
No, they're rubbish! The L lenses' red ring is definitively a warning sign. Canon's top-of-line lenses are the ones with the platinum (some say "silver") ring on the front.

pturton
For some, the L stands for bank Loan.

L lenses are generally better built and have better optical properties than non-L lenses thus the higher price for the added quality.

And if you drop an L, it makes a heavier paper weight than the non-L counterpart.
ben_quinn1
if you drop them they often survive unlike non-L, I dropped my 70-200 at least 6 or 7 times, still fine

mendel_leisk
Their build quality is a step up. Actually, it's more the other way around: imho the build quality of many of Canon's non-L lens is substandard. The L-lens image quality tends to be a step up, but in some cases not by a lot, and again, I think there are some exceptions: L-lens with near unacceptable light and sharpness fall-off in the corners, coupled with shoddy quality control.

I would just consider Canon's offerings lens-by-lens, consider the L factor, but don't let it become a deal maker/breaker.

The-Digital-Picture is a good reference.
stamos
L is just a letter in alphabet.
Ok. Now seriously these lenses are really good optically, mechanically and very good investment (better than deposits in some banks, as some of these banks are today).
