hughes
Would somebody please answer this question , I have a Summaron 35mm 3.5 M mount lens #1177076 that according to all sources I have was made in 1953, which is before the M camera came out. It appears to be an original M mount could someone explain, did they make the lenses and hold them over till the M was introduced or what
Steve.

leicaglow
Hi Steve, I think there is some discrepency on dates. The sites I trust most on date info indicate it is from 1954. Check this out: 35mm Summaron Info .
hughes
Michael
you are right thank you. The lens is from 54 not 53 but it must have come with eyes originally, is there any physical difference from a lens with eyes and one without
Steve
mpo
The focusing of the Summaron with goggles is different from the plain Summaron. If you remove the goggles from a lens, the rangefinder will not work properly (and you would need to bypass the interlock of the focusing mechanism).

1954 was the year of introduction of the MP and some MP's had the framelines for 35mm, so this lens would have matched that model. The M2 did not appear until 1956.
mpo
Latest news.
According to Hove's Guide, 4441 bayonet-mount Summarons were produced in 1954... and the goggled version did not appear until 1956 !
ian_stuart
My understanding is that the earliest 35mm Summarons did not come with goggles - they were supposed to be used with an auxiliary 35mm finder on the M3. This particular lens looks good to me!
hughes
Thank you guys
I just demonstrated a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, the lens is in mint shape and very compact I will try it next week on an M2
Steve
paul_neuthaler
3.5 Summaron a wonderful little lens; the 2.8 Summaron is a GREAT lens -- in my opinion
can play with the big Summicron boys -- all 26 versions!
