pam_bianco
I'm sure I'll be opening myself up for a HUGE amount of comments, but please understand my question before you reply :) I'm fairly new to photo.net and photography, in general. However, since joining recently, I've noticed a large amount of nudes posted in the gallery section. Not being a prude and enjoying a beautiful photo, this doesn't bother me. What does (now this is where "art" comes into play) is that they come up randomly and are often of a less artsy nature (to put it politely). I was under the impression that nudes could be categorized that way in the critique forum in order to prevent those who did not want to participate in nude critique from viewing those photos. As my computer is in a public room in my home, and I have young children, I wonder what prevents gallery nude photos from popping up without warning?? Again, this only refers to those photos that I (and I know this sounds like censorship, but it's not) find less than art -- the ones that nearly resembly porn, to a point. Thank you for your time and please don't respond to blast me on my opinion -- it is just that, opinion. :) Pam
chris_hawkins
Most of the folks who post nudes are thoughtful enough to put "nude" in the title. This keeps accidental viewing of nudes to a minimum. Otherwise stay away from the "fine art" section or wait until they are in bed to look at the gallery. I've taken a somewhat different approach with my 12 & 13 year old boys. I've told them on multiple occassions that if they want to look at nude women, don't sneak around with magazines or the interact. Take a look at my photography books. Kids are curious about bodies and I'd rather them view the nudes of Weston, Sturges, etc. treatment of bodies than the crap they can find elsewhere. So... go ahead and look at the gallery, nudes and all. If you and your kids come upon an offensive image, talk with them about way you don't like it. Also find the sensitve and beautiful nudes for them to see and talk to them about its beauty. Teaching your kids about the beauty of the human body and repect for it may be one of the more important things you do. I believe the earlier you start, the easier it will be. Puberty is way too late. Good luck. (Your approach may be different from mine and I can respect it.)
carl smith
I think that's a really great approach Chris. A very open mind is the only way you could handle that, and I think it's a great thing. And you're right, I'd much rather them be looking at the types of images you mention than what's scattered about the web and elsewhere.
