No color in a 50mm f/1.8 II lens

I just revived my 50mm f/1.8II lens. Living in Vegas I went to the shark reef. The lens was working fine till I went home and reviewed the photos. All the photos look like they were in black and white. I have not change any settings in my canon 450D. I have taken photos with the kit lens and the 70 - 300 f/4 - 5.6 IS USM and all the photos had excellent color. Is it a bad lens or is it regular with this lens because it is using old parts?

It looks like you hit the "sepia" button. Is it still working like this? I often turn the knob on my D70 accidentally when I get it out of the bag. Maybe something similar happened to you. I can't imagine that a lens removes all colour.

This has to be a camera issue, Alemar - a lens cannot suck the colour out of an image.

It is physically impossible for an uncolored 35mm format lens to completely monochromaticize (made up word) an image like this. This 100% a software issue, and I would bet 100:1 odds that you have in fact hit some setting on your camera accidentally without knowing it. If you cannot find the setting (probably a "picture mode"), do a camera reset and see what happens.

Also, if it is (as I suspect) a picture settings mode, and you're shooting RAW, then this will only show up in Canon's Digital Photo Professional software; open the images in another program. If you shoot JPG, it's burned into the files permanently.

I do not think it is the sepia button. On the lcd it has all the color in the photo.

I'm not that familiar with Lightroom...does it have a default import setting? Since you can see the color on the LCD, I can only imagine the RAW image is being manipulated when you import it to your computer. ?

It looks light Lightroom is set to convert to sepia. If not, there is a serious issue with your camera if the LCD is in color, but the recorded RAW file looks like this upon conversion in Lightroom.

I'm betting there's a sepia setting in Lightroom somewhere.

If it were the lens, it would have something to do with the electrical contacts and not the glass itself.

Many old lenses were designed back in the days of black and white photography. What few younger people realize is that the world actually was black and white in those days, and for this reason the older lenses were designed to only transmit "black and white light."

Unfortunately, once you use a black and white lens on your camera, the camera will be irreversibly reset to black and white mode. You can test this by trying another lens on the camera.

There is indeed.

Furthermore, these images are in Pro Photo RGB rather than in SRGB which makes 'em even more "washed out" on non colour-managed browsers.

I'm afraid to say you didn't get it quite right. I had this happen with my D30 a long time ago. I did all kinds of interent searches and read through an untold number of photograéphic and other books before finally arriving at the solution.

The camera and all of it's lenses must be sent to Rainbow Brite, Box 1305, Rainbowland. She is the only person in the universe who can exorcise the evil spirit of Murky Dismal from the affected gear and return it to full functionality again ;;;-D)))

Dan, i didint know there was any such thing as black light.

My "B&W" lenses only transmitted white light, but I took out all of the glass and now they work great!

I remember some video students getting very angry when I refused to sell them some black and white video tape.

If I had known about Alemar then I could have asked to borrow his dichroic 50mm EF II.

It's either a major major fault or a major laugh. Maybe he should switch to Nikon?

I still do not know what happend because 4 photos were in color and the rest had no color. I had to do a master reset in lightroom. Now everything is fine.<div>

Do you know where i could get the B&W 50mm 1.8 for my Nikon D60, that is really cool what you have..., I have the Color Version, the B&W Version would complete the set beautifully.
