azn137
Hi guys, it's me again. I'm just going to straight to the question I'm having right now. KEH is having this Nikon 105mm f2.8D for $450, EX or EX+ condition. OTOH, Amazon.com has this Sigma 105mm f2.8 for $400. So, my question is, which one should I get. If it's from KEH, should I get the EX or EX+ one??

Thanks.

Tam.
SolaresLarrave
I'd go for the Nikon if I were you. The only reason I bought a Sigma 105mm was price; usually, the Sigma goes for less. It may well be that this is the newer version, though.

In any case, if you can swing it, go Nikon. If not, take the Sigma. You won't be at loss with either.
bill_keane2
I'd go for the Nikon OR a new Sigma 70mm 2.8 (check it out).
azn137
uh-oh. I just did some read-up on the Sigma 70mm. People are saying it's way better than the 105mm. Will the Nikon 105mm be comparable with the Sigma 70mm??
bill_keane2
The Sigma 70mm may be the sharpest lens they make, and SLR.COM may give a more direct comparison with the Nikon 105mm. Naturally the 105 gives more working distance...
My sense is though, if I were going Sigma macro, I'd either go 70mm or their 150mm.
commtrd
I would go with a Sigma 150 macro personally. I have a Nikkor 105VR f2.8 and a Sigma 150 macro. They are both excellent lenses and the reason I got the 150 was for more working distance on nervous bugs; however you will find that both lenses serve very well as portrait lenses also.

SolaresLarrave
Hmmm... then, aim for the Sigma AF 105mm, which can be found sometimes new for a little below $400. I got mine a few years ago for around $350.
seismiccwave
You simply cannot go wrong with a Nikon 105mm f2.8D. I bought a used copy also and I have not regretted it. I bought the new f2.8G VR and I still use the f2.8D because besides the VR you really cannot tell them apart in image quality.
paul_garland
The Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR has got to be one of the finest lenses I have ever owned.
mark_audacity_romberg
If the optical formula of the AF 105 Nikkor is the same as the old manual-focus 105, I can also testify to what a great lens it is.
Plus, keeping your lenses 'all in the family', so to speak, means your lenses are all going to have (close to) the same color characteristics, so you won't have to develop different post-processing techniques for each lens.
azn137
Btw, the version on KEH was 105mm f2.8D w/o VR. I would have bought it in a heartbeat if it was the VR version.
azn137
If it's really worth it, I can cough up another $50 to get the EX+ one (http://www.keh.com/OnLineStore/ProductList.aspx?Mode=Digital&item=0&ActivateTOC2=&ID=13&BC=DN&BCC=3&CC=6&CCC=2&BCL=&GBC=&GCC=). The thing is, I'm not sure whether I should get the Sigma 105mm, Sigma 70mm or Nikon 105mm :(

This is a huge dilemma for me.

Thanks for your great responses so far.
leif_goodwin8
The Nikon. Even if the optics are similar, you get better build. And the Nikon will have a colour rendition to match other Nikon lenses unlike the Sigma.
lxtwin
I would go for the Nikon as well as I have the 105mm VR f2.8 as well and it is a great lens
