jon_de_la_cruz
Hi, I am a prospective Canon user and I was wondering at what focal lengths and focusing distances does the 40D's popup flash casts a shadow on the lens. Thanks. Jon
gregf
The flash is generally not going to be wider that 24mm
jon_de_la_cruz
According to the website flash coverage is " 17mm lens focal length (equivalent to 27mm in 35mm format)" What I would like to know is at focal length/focusing distances does the flash cast a shadow on the lens that will be visible on the bottom part of the photo. andrew_viny
I own a 24-70 2.8L and the pop up casts shadows at 24mm (the lens extends when zooming out). It really depends on the length of the lens. ~Andrew
james_fitzell
I'll have to test some time when I have my camera, but by *memory* it casts a shadow at all focal lengths. I know it's not a really big lens, but the 77mm end is sizable and definitely casts a shadow. The 430EX works fine (down to about 14mm anyway)
jon_de_la_cruz
James, That would be great if you could. If I could ask you a favor and not use the hood while testing.
jimstrutz
With the Tokina 12-24 the shadow starts showing at 15mm. Both of these use 77mm filters, and are also the same length and width, so results should be similar. Focusing close will exaggerate the problem. FYI, with the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS it doesn't cast a shadow at all unless you focus closer than 4', and then only at the widest end. Better than I would have thought. mark_e3
Just did a quick test... the shadow is visible at 17mm, but even at 22mm the corners are noticeably darker than the center while using the pop up flash on my Rebel.
PuppyDigs
I can use a 17-40L without a flash shadow on my 40D popup. No way with the hood as its huge. I can also use the 17-55 2.8 IS USM without lens shadow most of the time. I say most of the time as close distances at 17mm have a slight lens shadow on the bottom. Add a few feet or zoom slightly and it goes away. I actually like the slight flash vignette as it darkens unimportant stuff at the bottom of the frame like bellies and tablecloths. The 10-22 isn't a good choice for popup use as the 40D popup only covers as wide as 17mm. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
milton-chris
I use either a 420EX or a 580EX on my 40D with the 10-20. I seem to only use flash shooting indoors with that lens, and to eliminate the shadow, I aim the flash head over my shoulder and up at a 45-60-degree angle. I am shooting houses, typically not such big rooms, certainly no bigger than 15x20.
kasperhettinga
I use a 380EX with diffuser for my 10-20mm lens. Pop-up is useless for almost the entire focal length range...
kristian_dale
the flash will give you a shadow from the lens in your photo. It did on my sigma 10-20, and also on my friends canon 10-
JeffOwen
The pop up flash seems to cover down to 10mm across the width but the lens shadow becomes visable below about 17mm.
