Your camera doesn't take pictures in inches. What matters is the pixel count. The pixel count out of the camera is fixed (assuming you don't use a smaller image setting) and you can set the size in inches when you print, based on the dpi that you are printing at. Until you go to print, the inches and dpi are meaningless, only the pixel count matters.

dpi and/or ppi are simply labels attached to the image to tell the printer how big to print it hy default. You can change the label anytime you want to and you can change it to anything you want to. Dpi and Ppi are different, but often people get them mixed up. As Jeff says, all that really counts is the number of pixels. Anything else can be changed without affecting the original data.
