ben_quinn1
The part of the lens which extends when zooming in on my 24-70 has a slight wobble when I apply pressure to it, is this normal to have some play in this part of the lens. I cannot remember whether it was there before and I am worried there is something going wrong with it. I don't see any change in the picture quality however I have been skeptical in the past about the quality of this copy (the first copy I had went back to B&H as it was quite soft). I always use the hood with this lens. I can't get hold of another copy to compare so would appreciate some feedback from other owners.
bryantan
Mine has very slight play, but it's a fraction of a millimeter at most, and I'd have to try to notice it.
KenPapai
Slight play in mine as well, from the very beginning (3.5 years ago).
mvw photo
Very slight play here too. Main question: are the pictures OK? Michael
digitmstr
>>has a slight wobble when I apply pressure to it,<< Why would you do that? Lenses, especially zooms, are not rigid monolithic pieces so, some play it's normal. If the play is such that causes the imaage to go in/out of focuse that would be a problem. ben_quinn1
Giampi - why are you asking me why I would want to do that and yeah you are correct, a lens that goes randomly in and out of focus would be errrr a problem.
digitmstr
>>a lens that goes randomly in and out of focus would be errrr a problem.<< I meant, if the wobble is causing the lens to go out of focus as you zoom then, it's definitely a problem. >> why are you asking me why I would want to do that<< What made you want to apply pressure to the barrel? That's what I wondered...
chrisjb
Mine just a little, if it did not have some play it might bind and cause for complaint. I have a 28 135 that moves 1/2 a mil extended and a mil when not, its creepy when tilted. 24 70 doesn`t seem creepy :)
marknagel
Ben, I'm with Giampi, why? Why do people look for problems in their equipment? m
photo_dark
Mine doesn't wobble, but the zoom ring is pretty loose between 65 and 70mm
fotograf
I'm not sure why Canon changed direction with the design of this lens and the previous 28-70 f/2.8L as the original lens- the 28-80 f/2.8-4L which came out in the late Eighties did not move when zooming- the lens was normal when zooming, without extending any part of the lens. Same thing holds true for the four 70-200mm lenses. Seems a better design.
ben_quinn1
Mark & Gimpi - In anything mechanical some becoming loose can signal the beginning of the end, think of a wheel that is slightly loose on a car, after a while of driving it around it would fall off. Its not creepy when tilted but I think the play is too much so I am going to send it back to canon.
mark_audacity_romberg
Brian: I believe the design changed to allow the GLORIOUS self-adjusting nature of the shade cast on the front element.
Since the lens retracts for 70mm and extends for 24mm, the front element has less shade at 24mm where it would vignette, while being fully shaded at 70mm. It's a brilliantly simple design that it would be nice to see in other lenses.
