bob jr.
Last night I was at a political dinner fund raiser, and my 580 seemed to flash at times at random. Is it possible that I was accidentally hitting the FEL button? Has anyone else had this problem?
pjmeade
Mine has done that when I've nudged the shutter, I assumed it was related to the autofocus at the time.
fred_fumhopf
It is part of the MarkII new features - photos that the flash sees that you should have taken - the Mark III will have gyroscopes to actually turn you in the right direction.
peter_j2
There is a strong probability your thumb inadvertently pressed the FEL button. It has happened to me and I thought the 580EX II was cursed.
jim_simon3
I noticed that when I switched to rechargable batteries my 550EX would do this and the 580Ex II does it as well. I'm not touching anything when it occurs. I just ignore it figuring that it the price to pay for the rechargables.
peter_j2
My old 580EX and new 580EX II use rechargeable NiMH batteries of various MaH's. They do not exhibit that phenomenon. If your 580EX II is still under warranty. Have it fixed. I had that random flash syndrome with an old Nikon SB800. I took it back to the store where it started to act up almost on cue. They replaced it with a problem-free SB800.
johnson_d.
Could it be that you hit the depth of field button and see the modeling flash? That's one of the first "features" I turn off because I'm always accidentally hitting that button.
amol
I bet it is the DOF preview button, I push it all the time, because I often grip the lens barrel when I frame a shot.
baivab
My friend was getting that. Had it reviewed. Here's what happened .. look at the contact points @ hot-shoe and the flash. There could be some short-circuiting.. in his case there was a film of OIL (yes, believe it, dunno till date how). But maybe....Fred is right? markonestudios
My bet is FEL or DOF preview...
