pierre_castonguay
Been researching this issue for a few hours now. Turns out the 285HV is safe to use with a voltage under 6 volts.
isaac_fast
I once asked Pentax what voltage was okay with Pentax DSLRs. They said as long as it's under 270 volts, you should be okay. (BTW, there are 2 kinds of 283's. See http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html for more on that) Makes sense, too! I used a crappy old 10th-party flash on my *ist DL once before I knew about all this stuff. Later I measured the voltage and it was from 80-100 volts! If I were you, though, I'd get a Sunpak 383 instead of Vivitar 283. Same guide no, same price, but the Sunpak has swivel head. Very handy for on-camera stuff.
