alfaromeo
Can the canon 430EX flash work as "fill flash" with canon G9 and do I have to turn the "on camera" flash off for this?
john v.
When you connect the 430EX (or any other Speedlite flash), the camera will automatically use the external flash - the built in flash will not fire. Therefore, you don't have to turn off the on-camera flash.
cliff_henry
I'm not sure I understand your question. I just received my G9 for Christmas and haven't had a chance to learn how it handles everything yet. I think when you install a flash in the hotshoe the camera will turn off the "on camera" flash, i.e., the built in flash. Is this the flash you are referring too? I have used my G9 with a 550EX indoors and it works fine. For fill flash, assuming the G9 works as all other Canon EOS bodies, in Av or Tv modes the hotshoe flash should exposure your main subject correctly. I don't yet know if the G9 applies auto flash reduction. Of course you can always compensate the flash and/or the camera to get the fill effect you want - see manual pages 148-150. Setting up a test should be a simple thing and you could learn exactly how your 430EX is going to react.
phule
Perhaps Jerry is thinking of external slave flash units that trigger off a cameras main flash?

savas_kyprianides
Near the back of the manual are pages directly addressing features of mounting 220EX; 430EX and 580EX II.
