marcus_andrewes
Hi I have a pre-owned F5. The vertical shutter release, when unlocked for use, enables permanent VR and one-time auto focus. To re-focus one must press the AF-ON button. I have not disabled the function for AF on via shutter release using the custom settings. Is that how it works correctly or should it be identical to how the main shutter release functions?
User_276104
I just got out my F5 and a VR lens. Both shutter release buttons work the same - each press refocuses, and VR stops after a few seconds when there is no pressure on the shutter release. User_276104
I know you mentioned that you haven't altered a custom setting for AF activation, but have you tried resetting all the custom settings with BKT + CSM buttons? I don't know if that would do anything, but at least you'd know that the camera was "zeroed out".
User_276104
And one last thought - it could be the classic case of dirty contacts. How does the camera react to regular AF or AF-S lenses?
marcus_andrewes
I think it is a button issue; the normal button works 100% correctly. Unless the vertical release is unlocked - then it ceases to function at all and the focus just goes la-la, with the VR permanently on. It may be dirt in the button or something; I think it may need a trip to the Nikon NZ agency for service! I have reset the custom things - no change. I only own "new" lenses so I can't try the older ones. Thanks for suggestions!
ShunCheung
On the F5, the main shutter release and the vertical one should function the same way. You might want to switch the AF mode to C (just below the lens release button) and see whether AF will continue to adjust as long as you are holding the shutter release button half way down. marcus_andrewes
Camera back from repair. It was a broken switch mount, apparently.
