byron_fry1
Hey guys, I need some help with horizontal scratches on my film. They are very faint but show up alot when scanning. I have read posts saying this could be from the printfile sheets? I use tri-x in hc 110, ilford rapid fixer, hypo clearing, and photo flo. Oh and I use patterson reels. I then hang dry in my shower for about 3-6 hours, then slide them into printfile sheets, then later scan them on a nikon V using its software. Does anyone have any ideas where these scratches are coming from and how I can fix my workflow? I was getting fine results with little or no scratches until about 5 rolls ago and I have changed anything?
frank.schifano
Well, could be the printfile sheets if they're not clean. You're not using a squeegee on wet film are you? That's a no-no.
evan_goulet
Check the film gate area of your camera for any dirt/burrs that could have popped up in the last 5 rolls.
luke_ballard
Yeah, I would agree it is probably something in your camera that poped up in there in the last few rolls. the film is dragging across it and making that scratch. Would be my best guess on the info you gave. L.
byron_fry1
Okay, thanks, I will blow it out with a bottle of canned air. I am not using a squeegee.
Bill Bowes
Hello everyone. With just 3 hours of drying your emulsion is probably soft and inserting the neg's into a sleeve of any type is risking the scraths. I let my neg's hang for a least a day if possible. When I converted to Pyro developing, I noticed similar scratching and went to the longer drying times..most likely the non acid fixer. Enjoy, Bill
justinblake
How do you guys dry your film if you don't use a squeege? I have problems with scratches from my squeege but I have tried just letting the film dry but then I get water spots all over my film which are worse. frank.schifano
Photoflo, or any other similar wetting agent, eliminates the need for a squeegee.
jim philopena
It's also best to give your film a quick final rinse - while hanging - with nothing but distilled water. Never a water spot or photoflow/stabilizer buildup.
hil3
When scanning, are you using the accessory that lets you scan a strip of negatives at one time? My experience is that the rollers that feed the film into the scanner leave horizontal scratches on the film. I stopped using this attachment and instead use the filmstrip holder that inserts into the slide attachment and scan one frame at a time. I also quit using print file sheets and use single strip pouches - they are much roomier and not tight to the negative. Hil
