neilambrose
Weird rules though. To be exhibited as a winning image you need a model release for any recognizable person. That rules me out. Probably almost everyone else, too.
adityatw
From what I read on the PDF doc, the release is required for images that are for sale, which is a standard rule. It is up to us to decide whether the image is for sale or not, right?

Uhooru
only required if used for commercial purposes, such as advertising..maybe they think they're going to use the winning photos as part of magazine promotion. that could be a problem. neilambrose
Agree with Brad - this is not a standard rule. I'm pretty familiar with what's normal in competitions. And I've sold unreleased street photos through exhibitions. This is the first time I've ever heard of a model release being required for a competition in the street photography genre. It's got nothing to do with commercial terms - any photograph made on the street can be sold without a release providing it's not presented out of context; comes under fair rules for art. See Philip-Lorca Di Corcia for a precedent example.
Uhooru
what if they put it on an insert and use to advertise the mag...it then becomes a commercial use, no?
neilambrose
what if they put it on an insert and use to advertise the mag...it then becomes a commercial use, no?

Perhaps, if it were used to advertise the magazine as a separate entity. But not if it were used only to advertise the exhibition, and the magazine just happened to be carrying the advert. (All galleries use images from their exhibitions as part of the promo for the exhibition, for example).

The interpretation of 'commercial use' is more usually concerned with taking the image and using it in a context unrelated to the image itself.
peteradownunder
is it B&W or colour?
cyanatic
Hmmm...model release requirement for street photography? That does strike me as odd. Being extra cautious perhaps? I've never run across that either. Regardless, thanks for the heads up.
j_sevigny
You may want to e-mail the folks at the Center about that for clarification as I've exhibited pictures with recognizable faces there before and never provided a release. There may be some difference -- I'm only assuming this -- because I believe there's a publication element to this contest. Best to everyone. js
clive1
Regarding "Model Release," I received this reply from the Center for Fine Art Photography to my email query. Go figure... Clive, We are not requiring a model release for this exhibition. Most anything you shoot will be acceptable. Azarie
