dmu
Hello All, I have a Canon 30D (2/3 aspect ratio) camera. I am taking action soccer shots for parents to purchase. With 8.3 MP to work with, I am wondering what format I should crop my pictures in to give the best options to the customers buying the pictures. I was thinking to go with 8x10. With this, people could order 5x7 or 4x6 without losing too much. I am trying to keep the pixels above 1,600 x 2,200 or so. I am able to keep this pixel count up even of the pictures is taken in landscape mode and I crop it in portrait mode from top to bottom. Let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks, Darrin
ellis_vener_photography
i'd stick with 4x6 (2:3 ratio)
tonybynum
I'm not sure what youre asking, sounds like you've got it covered to me, what other crop options might there be besides 1:1? You listed 8x10, 5x7 and 4x6. . . With that sensor it's best to stick with 4x6. but just shoot it as an 8x10 and you'll always be safe. . . trunfio
The question, I think, should not be how to crop your pictures after, but how to shoot your images. If you shoot full frame 2:3 ratio and fill the whole frame with action, it may not be aesthetically pleasing (or sometimes possible) to crop at all. This is why I've been looking at putting a Katz Eye screen on my cameras with 4:5 crop markings.
wilsontsoi
I would prioritize getting the image first with the format you're working with, which in your case is the 2:3 ratio. If you know for sure that majority will order 8x10 from you, then certain keeping that in mind as you shoot. For me, I simply try to fill the frame as much as I can. darrendrevik
While it depends somewhat on your pricing, you'll find 4x6 will be your most popular size purchased.
