wayne_campbell
What does the "Sponsored by Canon" actually mean under the Canon EOS Forum heading at the top of the page? None of the other forums (Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Leica) have anything equivalent.
ShunCheung
Actually, if you read threads in the Nikon Forum, you'll see similar Nikon advertisements with the Nikon yellow background, mainly the new D300 camera, etc. It doesn't use the exact words "sponsored by Nikon" though. ralph_jensen
On the forum Table of Contents page you'll see that several forums have sponsors; Nikon sponsors both "Nikon" and "Sports": http://www.photo.net/community/

rickvandenberg
Click on the "Advertise" link at the footer of most every page.
hjoseph7
If you click on it, it takes you straight to the Canon webstite.
ShunCheung
Things might have changed since I posted erarlier today. Now the Nikon Fourm threads do show the "sponsored by Nikon" wording. Or maybe it was there all along and I missed it earlier.
wayne_campbell
Shun, you're right. Earlier when I posted this there was no "Sponsored by Nikon". Soon they'll all be doing it.
jimstrutz
Alright! More money for Photo.net. I'm in favor of that. Does this mean they will reduce the voluntary membership fee, or raise the speed of the servers? Perhaps pay the moderators a stipend for all their hard work? Or maybe Photo.net will start to break even in the near future. :)
dave_holland
Well, with limited band width, my main frustration with the internet has been the slow page loading speed. Adding a sponsor offers income for the website, at the expense of slowing page speed further. In a way, it works like advertisements on TV. The consumer is forced to wait, while corporate America pushes its ideas on the consumer. The advertising driven site is designed to have a delay, while you have nothing to look at except the adverts. I guess we knew that day was coming.... jimstrutz
I remember when Photo.net was ad free, and it was faster back then -- at least when the servers were up, but the economics of life require such ventures to at least pay their own way, if not make a profit. And if we want a good experience here we either have to pay for it or get advertisers to pay for it. It looks like the day has come.
