iancoxleigh
It has been long time (last on October 15th) since we had a W/NW post in this forum. So, in the interest of reviving the practice and providing a touch of levity from the endless and repetitive questions, I am starting this thread.

Please post one (or two) images taken with the Nikkor 35mm f/2 or its competitors.

vivek iyer
Nice folks. I have not used a 35mm lens in a while (and I consider the Sigma 30/1.4 to be a cheaper (DX) version of the 28/1.4 Nikkor).
<left></left>
Old snap- 35-70mm f/3.5, Nikon FM2, Sensia, Canadian Rockies

sjmurray
Thanks, David. "Chocolate Face" was shot in available light outdoors at f5.6. Its pretty much a straight shot.
david_carlisle1
Most photographers would say that the ideal focal length for portraits is 85-105mm, and with adults I would agree, but with children and babies, you can be closer and use a wider lens, as this lovely photo demonstrates. sjmurray
Remember, on a DSLR with 1.5 crop factor, the 35mm lens "seems" more like a 50mm lens on a full frame camera, at least, the field of view is similar. Choice of lenses for a portrait depends on how much background you want to include, ie., whether or not its a head shot or "environmental" and how out of focus you want the background. The idea of using an 85-105mm lens for portraits is derived from full frame 35mm cameras, and assumed a head and sholders shot is desired, with a nice blurry background. I have done many portraits with as wide as a 28mm lens on 35mm full frame, but those included the environment and were not just head shots. There was not a lot distortion because I was far enough aware from the subject. Look at my 70's folder.
paul heskes
One of my favourite lenses. I Shot side by side with the Sigma 30mm f1.4 on a D80 and my 35mm f2 on the F6 and the Nikkor knocks spots off the Sigma.
Add the bonus that it can be used on film and digital and 'for me' there's no question about it
Regards
Paul
