thomas_fiege
hi guys! I have a very specific question. I have an old picture it is from my grand, grand, grand, grand, grand father and mother. It was made before 1851. It is a Daguerreotypie which is a picture on a silver plate. What I would like to know if some one of you know how to handle such a picture. if there are things like not to place in direct sun... ok I would not do that. I dont know anybody who have experiance with such old pics. They are not realy common. and I hope some one of you have had an experiance with that kind of picture. thanks Thomas
James G. Dainis
The daguerreotype is in a tightly sealed union case, I hope. The only thing you have to do is never take it out of the case for cleaning. If you try to do that you will ruin it. James G. Dainis

frank.schifano
Do you have an art museum nearby? Talk to the curators there. They know how to care for these things, probably far better than most people responding to questions on these boards. If there's no one near you, call someone at ICP or The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Both institutions have extensive photographic collections. The Metropolitan has more than a few daugerrotypes, many of which are often on display.
