michele_alvaro
I wanted to a pose a question before I head out to by the 3volt battery I was told to purchase. Saturday My 30D which I've had for a year now has suddenly died on me. I was in the middle of taking photos when a noise that sounded like something mechanical came to a halt and then nothing - it died. The only thing that worked was the blue printer light in the top left hand corner. No information came on any screens and even when I turned off the camera the blue printer light button was continuously on. The only way it went off was when I pulled the battery out. Even taking that out and putting it back in did not reset the camera - just turned on the blue light. So I guess my question is - WHat happened? and If I get the internal 3volt battery replaced, do you think that would do the trick? I just find it ODD that the blue printer light is the only thing that is on and working. Well not working but BLUE and ON... Also my 10D started acting up at the same time - it still worked but no Autofocus worked and only old lenses were able to work but I, again, had to use manual focus in order for the camera to shoot anything. Again, would this be the 3Volt extra battery that needs replacing? I am dumbfounded considering my 10D is much, much older than the 30D and I never, ever had this problem before. And for them both to malfunction at the same time is just bizarre to me. I ended up having to buy another camera (the 20D) since I had been in the beginning stages of shooting a wedding - I am just lucky there was a Camera Shop right down the street. And I don't mind manual focusing I prefer it, but for only two lenses to work on the camera just doesn't make sense. ANY HELP would be most appreciated. Thank you! patrick tom
Hello...sorry to here about your problem...perhaps it could shutter lag...the camera was in the middle of shutter actuation but lagged because of the power outage...it may have not sounded like a shutter actuation because of the power problem...why don't you go back to the camera shop and ask if you can switch out the battery first before you buy the battery...they should have display cameras...does the 20d have the same battery?...if that doesn't work try going to Canon...They worked on one of my lenses a couple weeks after warrantee for free...find the closest service center...send them an email or give them a call...hopefully you bought it new from an authorized dealer...Good luck
hjoseph7
Murphys Law ! When it rains it pours, A curse by jilted lover, could be anything but it's unusual for both cameras to malfunction at the same time. I would send both cameras to Canon since the problems you described are way passed my knowledge. I also have a 30D and within 3 weeks of owning it, I dropped on hard cement. So far, I have not had any problems with it, but problems seem to be creeping up with this camera as I read some of these Posts.
PuppyDigs
If you shoot weddings everyday, you probably wore out the 30D shutter. When the PRAM battery fades, the camera starts forgetting settings when you pull the mains, e.g., last M mode aperture and shutter used or date and time. Sounds like you need to save up for a really beefy rig like a 1D series. I have a May 2003 10D and the PRAM battery is still fine. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
andrew robertson
Or just replace the shutter for a few hundred bucks, every once in a while. Are you using non-Canon lenses by any chance? Some of them can cause intermittent camera gremlins like you describe. I bought a 10D right when they came out and have had to replace the PRAM battery once already. Try replacing it before you decide to send it in. And if you DO send the camera in, don't bring it to the local shop. Send it to Canon directly. Local shops just do the same thing and charge you a few hundred bucks for their trouble.
thomas_horan
I had a similar problem with a 10D . I was using it and it shut off. It started a few times days later ,but shut down again. I tried cleaning ALL the contacts ,replacing the batteries, the CR2025,switching lenses, even using the AC adapter. I sent it to Canon and got a $290.00 plus shipping and ins.($320.00) estimate. However, they would not say what specifically they would fix .Only that they would fix my power problem. They don`t open up cameras until you OK the price.I guess at $290 it covers anything. It was too much in my mind so I bought a 30D and will probably scrap or give away the dead 10D .Of course the 10D dual battery grip will not fit the newer camera! Send it in to Canon, but it may cost 1/3 of more of the cost of a newer model. Thomas
gregg_matthews
Your batteries are probably too old to hold a charge. Just buy new ones.
ajpn
A year old and the battery is dead? You must be using multiple batteries if you have a 10D. And you get the same result with all of them? Definitely replace the PRAM first.
