hector_evans
I heard that Canon's Image Stabilization feature doesn't work that well at short distances, but works best at long distances. In fact, they said that this is the case for all similar technologies (e.g. Nikon's VR) Is this true? thanks

PuppyDigs
Also, AF is pretty useless at macro distances. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
lester_wareham
Nikon claim VR is effective up to 1/30 magnification and reducing after that. I would think Canon IS is the same. These limits are due to more degrees of movement freedom becoming significant at higher magnification. No hard numbers but my practical experience with a 300/4L IS which provides about 2 stops of stabilization (measured accurately at 1/13 magnification). At higher magnifications of 0.3 to 0.5 the stabilization is about 1 stop, but this latter figure is an impression in the field not a measurement.
