water too hot?

Recommended Posts

I just mixed a package of the D-76 to make a litre of stock. Unfortunately,

the water I used was around 160, give or take, degrees F. Will this high a

temperature during mixing affect the chemistry? (Naturally, I intend to let

the stuff cool down to 68 degrees before I use it.)

I have a solar hot water heater that heat my water up to 180 degrees in the summer time , I have mixed my D76 near this temp, and never has a problem. You do not want to try and mix developer at too cold a temp ,as the chemicals do not want to go into solution.

Sodium Sulphite doesn't like to be dissolved in very hot water. It'll break down to the useless sulphate and possibly give off sulphur dioxide fumes in the process. This is very bad for you if you suffer from Asthma, since it can trigger an attack.

If you use water at around 40 Celsius (about 105 F) then it's safe for all photographic chemicals. You shouldn't have any problem dissolving them at that temperature either.

I think the highest one is supposed to go while mixing d76 is 140?.

That being said, I am pretty sure I have read slightly higher mixing temp should be fine.

That stuff can be a bugger to mix if too cold. I did a 125? recently with imperfect results.

This amateur tends to process a non-critical roll as a new developer's first victim in case something is amiss.
