Leonard-just-Leonard
so, after much contemplating I finally went digital this known problem of not being able to see the LCD display in bright sunlight is much worse than I expected :( only had it for a couple days so have not experimented too much. How do you "fix" that problem. some things that come to mind are... 1. sunglasses 2. big black umbrella 3. cloth hood like in the old days of photography what actually works? even cupping my hand over the display does not work well at all. eric friedemann
It would help to know which camera you own.
ronald_moravec1
Back to the sun, bend over shield from top light. Hoodman makes a viewing hood. I have mine set to show the histogram which is bright yellow and can toggle to a view with nothing. If that is not good enough, I find dark area. One time I made a box type shield from cardboard and tape. It did not work well. Nikon D200.

eric friedemann
Here's a Delkin pop-up hood of the sort Ronald mentions listed by B&H as a potential accessory for the S10: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=details_accessories&A=details&Q=&sku=410671&is=REG&addedTroughType=accessory_detail&addedTroughValue=457050_REG
SCL
Like lighting a cigarette in the wind...you turn your back to the wind...in this case the sun.
vincent_daly
You can get these pop up shades that have buttons which coincide with the menu buttons at the rear of the camera.. not all pop up shades/hoods have these..they are simple to install. you remove the eyepiece and the plastic lcd screen protector and the pop up shade fits perfectly.. http://cgi.ebay.ie/LCD-Screen-Protect-Pop-up-Shade-for-Nikon-D80_W0QQitemZ190112192098QQihZ009QQcategoryZ31388QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
Tim_Lookingbill
Get you a hat with either a wide brim or one with a neck and ear flap. I carry a white cotton t-shirt wrapped around my DSLR strapped to my neck to protect from dust on long hikes into the woods. It doubles as a reference for setting manual WB and during midday I use it as a hood over my head with my baseball cap holding it down.
Leonard-just-Leonard
this is why I love Photo.net ask any question and practical real-life answers appear. thanks to all who responded, I will experiment and if I come up with anything better I will post it. the concept of turning your back to the sun is interesting, however when taking a panoramic shot from the top of a mountain your options are limited
shannon_kish
I bought a LCD screen "hood" from Walmart for $15.00. I used it on my Sony DSC-H2 and it worked really well. I haven't tried it on my Nikon d40x yet. What I like about it, however, is that I have the option of taking it off to view the LCD screen when the sun is not out.
