o._wagner
So here is my dilemma. I shoot weddings for a studio and we shoot in RAW, which I don't do with my own weddings. We are given a hard drive with all of our images and we have to delete it down to a certain amount. Once you're done with that, the files have to be renumbered starting with "0001" in chronological order and categorized into subfolders. For most photogs I've asked, this process takes about 3-4 hours. Sounds easy right? My problems: I run a PC and have Photoshop CS. Windows RAW Viewer won't show me my 30D thumbnails but will show me my 20D thumbnails. I looked into this and there doesn't seem to be a download for it. I downloaded a trial version of Lightroom but I'm not sure how to use it as a categorizing tool yet so I'm essentially using Lightroom to view the files and Windows to move and delete. I've gotten my edit down to the correct number and now I need to rename them. I can't figure out how to sort them in chronological order and I can't view RAW files in Photoshop CS (which is how I normally batch rename). I have arranged them in Windows by "Modified Date" but that didn't do it. I can't arrange them by name because they were downloaded onto the hard drive in random order. I AM LITERLLY GOING CRAZY HERE. I have wasted way too much of my life on this and I am up against a brick wall. My assistant and I synched cameras before we started shooting so I know there's a way to arrange them I just can't figure it out. I have a wedding tomorrow too, so my nightmare will start all over again. I only have 4 weddings with this studio this year so I won't have to deal with RAW much longer. Any help would be appreciated, as well as an easier way to go about all of this!
dennis osipiak
You should have the raw conversion software suppled with the 30D camera..actually 2 programs..one called Zoombrowsers and the other more advanced CanonDPP (DPPI?) I believe. Both convert RAW, but DPP has more fine tuning. Both should and do allow for renumbering files. (Files are on the Canon utilities CDROM that came with the camera) Dennis
o._wagner
Thanks, I see that I can batch rename on DPP but I don't want to convert the RAW files, I just want to rename them. I need to keep them RAW.
stephen dohring
I would learn lightroom - there are ton of video tutorials on the web - it is very easy to learn wathcing videos. JPG and RAW makes no difference in LR you can do all the same stuff. Learn one and you have them down. The export fron RAW to JPG is the only extra step. bill_clark___minnetonka_mi
Keep the faith and stay with RAW. Have you downloaded the plug in for the 30D from Adobe? It's free! Try this: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=Canon+30D+plug+in Hope this helps you! Best!

o._wagner
Thanks Bill, the RAW plug in doesn't work on PS versions older than CS2, I have CS! See my dilemmas here?! ;)

tim_dodd
The download here - http://www.exifpro.com/other_projects.html - will allow you to view 30D raw files in Windows XP File Explorer. If you're running Vista then Canon now has a raw viewer codec for the Vista File Explorer which you can download from the Canon website - http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=215&modelid=12929 - click through to drivers/software. mariah_smith
I have the same problem :( I downloaded Adobe DNG Converter (free from adobe.com) and have to run my RAW's through it before I can view them. When you convert them to to DNG's & open them in CS, you get all the options you got when you opened a RAW. The only thing I've run into is that you can't then save the file as a jpg. That might help you some...good luck!
greg_tan
I use Photomechanic to download all my files. It is the fastest way to view raw files as it uses the embedded jpeg to view them. I apply IPTC data on download. It is blazingly fast to rename images. It can view and name raw+jpeg pairs together. You can sort using any sort of criteria such as time taken. Slide show is also very quick, and I use this function to quickly go through several hundred photos from a wedding and discard or tag the ones I want. aleskoubik
I use Canon DPP and I love it. The new version (3.0) is actually pretty good and it takes no time to process large amount of RAW files. http://www.usa.canon.com/content/dpp2/index.html

iskandar_azaman___kuala_lu
If you are going to do a lot of this sort of thing i suggest investing in PSCS3. Bridge will allow you to rename very very easily. All i do is sort by date created (i.e. chronological), then batch rename. 1000's of files done in a minute or 2. If not, use the Canon software the camera came with. Another way is, put all the folders on a thumbdrive or portable drive. Bring it to the studio or whoever has PSCS2 and Bridge, then rename. Simple.
desiraelynn
You might want to try CS2 or 3. With the newer versions, you can use the more up to date Bridges. That way you can see both camera files at once.
