tom_jenner1
Hey All, I was wondering, out of curiousity, what are some of the lower cost DSLR's with mirror lock up? I'm talking about mirror lock up for taking pictures and not sensor cleaning. I know the Nikon D200 has it but I have no clue about other brands. I had a shooting situation last week using a 180/2.8 and some of the shots were around 1/15sec and you can guess what happened to the sharpness even using a sturdy tripod (Nikon D70s). I ended up using a higher f stop than I wanted to get a longer shutter time. Any DSLRs out there in the $1,000 ballpark with mirror lock up? Will vibration reduction help with mirror shake or are the accelerometers not sensitive enough? Anyone hear of a manafactuer adressing the mirror vibration issue purely in software? -Tom
danield
All Canon digital SRLs except the 300D have it.
godfrey
All the Pentax DSLRs support a mirror lock up function: Set the self timer to the 2 second mode and they lift the mirror, then release the shutter 2 seconds later. Godfrey
2yellowdogs
Nothing in the Nikon lineup until you get to the D80. Here's a good cross reference of the various Nikon features: http://www.bythom.com/currentdslr.htm
tom_jenner1
Thanks for the quick response. It looks like the Sony Alpha also has the 2 second mode feature. Come on Nikon, get with the program! You're killing some of us here with no built in VR, no full sensors, no lock up in the lower priced cameras... If only those older prime lenses weren't so inexpensive and good. Maybe I jumped ship from Minolta/Sony to Nikon to soon. -Tom
tom_jenner1
Hey thanks Dan, I didn't realize that the D80 had it. That was going to be my next camera (despite my mini rant above, I just love the AI and AIS prime lenses and that's what sold me, even without metering in the D70s). -Tom
joseph_wisniewski
The D80 has an "anti shock" mode that flips the mirror up, waits 0.4 seconds, then fires the shutter. It may be just the ticket for a 180mm at 1/15 sec on a tripod. Sure is useless for a 25mm macro lens racked out 200mm on a bellows.
richard_oleson
......of course, on the Canon I use my old Nikkors and still get metering and autoexposure..... :)=
phule
<<All Canon digital SRLs except the 300D have it.>> I believe that, with the 3rd party firmware, you can get MLU on the 300D as well.
tom_jenner1
Richard, If you use the manual Nikkors with the Canon can you still get infinity focus using an adapter?

tom_jenner1
Thanks Richard, This gives me a much greater selection for my next camera!
richard_oleson
yeah. i had actually cut nikon off my list because of their shortcomings in accepting their own lenses. right now i have one adapter that's just the bayonet, which cost something like $8, and a second with a chip to trigger the AF lights, which was more like $80. i'm in the process of deciding whether the chip is worth the extra money or not. feel free to stay in touch with me off-forum as this progresses if you're thinking about going a similar direction. dave_redmann
I think all of the Sony and Konica Minolta DSLR's have MLU coupled with the 2-second self-timer. In other words, if you use the 2-second self-timer, right after the your fire, it mirror goes up, then two seconds later the shutter opens. I know this is how my Maxxum 5D works.
