mike_p4
The following image was taken with a Nikon D50 and a Signa 30mm 1.4 lense. They were shot at f 1.4 and 1/40, auto WB, ISO 800. It was the first image of 51 images taken with the same lense, camera combination. The fifth inage had a similuar effedt. None of the of the other images had this same effect. I have never seen anything like this and have have no idea what caused it. Any ideas.
jim_e.
The hole in the ozone layer may have passed over you while you were taking these photographs. Actually, that is the weirdest thing I've seen. No ideas here.

Sanford
A guess would be a shutter problem. I hope it's something to do with the card though since I have this camera and don't want to know about potential problems. Can you reproduce the effect with a different card? markd2
Try reformatting your memory card. Some kind of file system corruption might have happened.
dennis lee
First, does the image look, or did it look like this on the back of the camera? I had this problem once when using what I have to assume was a faulty card reader. I was shooting portraits of a 'Mom and child' school, and downloading to my computer in between sessions. I noticed the numbers weren't jiving somehow and decided to check the files. I saw all sorts of strange stuff similar to what you posted here. I ran an 'image retrieval' program on the cards that hadn't been reformatted and was able to save many pictures. I later did a test downloading a card from the camera and then downloading the same card through the card reader. The card reader garbled the pictures terrible, whereas the files downloaded from the camera are fine. I've never used a card reader since, and always download directly from the camera. The only exceptions being when I need to download to my Epson P200. I shoot with a D2H and the battery life is amazing. I don't even think twice about it. Check your card reader by checking the images on the camera, or by downloading from the camera.
blumesan
Yes, looks like some problem getting the image from the camera to the card. Most likely problem with the card, not the camera. Hope I'm right :) Cheers/Mike
simus
Mike, how does it look if seen on the camera display? Antonio
bjørn rørslett
This is an error either within the camera (looks like a "compressor board" issue), or with the transfer to the computer. In the first case, a repair facility is the answer, in the lattter case, could be intermittent only due to poor cabling/contacts. In my experience, card readers are much to be preferred over just hooking up the camera directly to the computer.
daviddbfotoart
I got this sort of thing a lot when using a dodgy ebay cf card. Bet if you tried opening it in Photoshop, it told you it was "truncated".
albertdarmali
It's preemptive crop.
erik_loza
Check the card or cable, first. Good luck.
mike_p4
Well, after reading the responses so far I checked and the image looks normal on the camera back but when I connected the camera to the computer (I orginally used a card reader) it still has the weird effect. Interesting when viewed with Nikon View it appears fine but when viewed or opened with any other software the effect is present. For what it's worth, the card in question is a SanDisk Ultra II. The card was reformatted prior to use.
simus
which of this option are you shooting with? 1) jpeg, 2) nef, 3) jpeg + nef. if camera is set on jpeg + nef, switch on jpeg only and try to shot more photos then try with nef only and see what happens. david_gagnon
Is it possible that the boy is going through a growth spurt? Maybe the shutter curtain caught him at the before and after phase? ;-) ;-) DG
mike_p4
At times it seems he is growing just that fast.
mark_garlick
Mike, I have just posted a problem and then saw your own post. My problem with the D80 is very similar to yours. Take a look. It's in the Nikon forum. Thanks.
