mark_sam
So much has been written about filters, but assume one does not want to change filters, what is a great "all around" filter? Simple UV? I remain stressed to some degree putting a relatively inexpensive piece of glass in front of expensive glass for fear that it will compromise sharpness, etc. But also afraid of scratching lens. Your thoughts? Thanks.
leicaglow
Your fears of cheap glass are valid. You have to invest in a good brand. If you're using Canon, they make a really good filter. I used to use Nikon's all the time, but they're hard to get these days. I also use Hoya Super HMC (multi-coated), B&W, and Heliopan. I almost always use a filter, but these days it's usually a clear version rather than UV.
godfrey
There is no need for a "protection" filter unless you're shooting in circumstances of flying water and/or debris in the air (sandstorms in the Iraqi desert, etc) ... then you'll need to take it off frequently to clean it. Install a proper, rigid lens hood and learn to keep your fingers off the front element of the lens. Godfrey
jcuknz
I rate the lenshood and a reasonably good bag to carry the camera in ahead of a UV filter. Filters should be added when they are needed for specific shots. Treat your camera with common sense care.
peter_glass1
JC has it right. Spend a lot of money on quality optics, and then "protect" it with cheap glass. False economy.
