Wouldn't really do anything to this paticular photo Mary - it's great as is. However...if i did anything at all, i would give detail to the white dress and black suit and convert it to a true b/w. I would also lift the skin tones a bit - as is looks a little flat. The origional capture in your post looks somewhat underexposed to my eye.

For me however, doing much of anything to this photo would be devauling it. Great feeling to it.

Layer -> duplicate layer. Image -> adjustments -> selective color. color white: black arrow=+100% , color Neutrals: black arrow= +... % , yellow arrow= +16% , color black: black arrow= +...% click OK.

After that I went to selective color -> color white:black arrow= +% until I started seeing the details of the dress. I added a layer mask and I decreased the opacity of the brush to 16%. I went around the faces with the brush and some spots on the dress that were overdone by the process. At the end I sharpened it.
00JX7m-34442984.jpg.e3f94b51542dda70667be53b4ae3deda.jpg

I ran a gradient black and white action that I have saved via Marc's gradient black and white technique. (Since it is an action, I can't remember what it is!). Then I did a levels adjustment to give it more contrast. I cloned out the sun spot on the bottom left corner of the grass. Then I added it to a black canvas with two different color grey strokes, the colors selected out of the image.

I really wouldn't do a whole lot to this image, it is a great image. I do think a color image would have given people a lot more artistic freedom to create some great variations. There is a lot more you can do with a color image than a black and white image.... now someone will prove me wrong... someone who is more creative than me!
00JXB2-34443684.jpg.ee69d49b2962be0b71e6708afbf4c339.jpg

What did I do:

1. Levels (slid in from the "left" and then moved gamma to 0.98 from 1.0)
2. Channel Mixer for a true B&W image - RED channel gad the worst info so my RGB mix was 30-35-35.
3. Shadow/Highlight tool to bring out some dress detail and to lessen the bright white lights here and there on the entire image
4. USM (Unsharp Mask) of 70%, 0,8, 0 on a selection just arund the couple.
5. Added black border of 3 pixels.

00JXCL-34444084.jpg.c9f271028ec115ac9cb9bc6f9d7087be.jpg

What I did: Converted to grayscale to dump the tone. Duplicated the background and added a little gausian blur. Masked the dupe layer to reveal the couple. Adjusted levels to bring back the blacks. Added a dodge and burn layer to further darken the background and lighten the couple. Added a gentle contrast curve layer for some added pop and cropped out the bright sky at the top.

First..

This is one of 70+ images taken during the couples session and is one I chose that I felt needed some work as well as an image that could possibly be played with...

If any of you have ever seen the "photoshop challenge" in the DWF forum....... Take advantage of the opportunity to really go crazy with this shot! Don't have to be conservative here...We're also looking for really out there work.

This is a learning thread. Lets play.

Honestly Mary, I think the original looks great as is, but perhaps this would be a nice adjustment for an album.

Layer rich

layer 1- increase contrast with 's' curve
layer 2- original image, adjust for several stops darker to bring in dress detail, erase all but dress and merge to layer 1

layer 3- copy layer 1, 'color' blending mode
layer 4- original image, apply radial blur to background, erase couple, reduce layer opacity
layer 5- copy layer 1, 'darken' blending mode
expand canvas .15inch
layer 6,7- frame with dark border, apply drop shadow to all sides. In layers style palette set drop shadow to 'difference' mode
layer 8- original image, set to 'hard light' blending mode
layer 9- original image, erase all but grooms suit, set layer opacity to 51% to bring back detail in grooms suit.

Honestly it took longer remembering & typing the steps I used to get this than working on the image, but I had a lot of fun! Thanks for the assignment Mary!
