eyadnalsamman
Hi friends, I have found a secondhand telephoto lens (Pentax 70-200mm 1:4) and I want to get your advices before purchasing it, I still a beginner in the photography at all. -It will cost me around ($70 USD) without its lenss plastic cover or its leather holding bag, is it an adequate price? -Will it work properly with my old Pentax ME? -Can I use this kind of lenses in a macro or portrait photos? Thank you for your help.
alan_chan4
Not exactly a good deal at $70 as it's not a very good lens in the first place. You might try to look for this one instead.
stemked
Provided we are talking about the Pentax 80-200 f4-5.6 FA (not Takumar of the same focal length) I'd say I respectfully disagree with Alan. I think it is a fine optic (for a consumer lens) which ranked well in Popular Photography tests at the time, decent close focusing and the price doen't seem too far out of line to me, but then I haven't priced this lens in a long time. markku_ylilammi
It seems that there is no Pentax 70-200 lens. The picture looks like K or M version of the 80-200 / 4.5 zoom. At least the M version is very good and $70 is a low price for it. All Pentax 135-film size lenses with aperture ring work in M-series bodys. 80 mm focal length is the traditional one for portraits. Usually, however, a higher maximum aperture is preferable in order to remove background. For macro work (magnification 1 - 10 :1) zooms are not the best choice. Anyway, with 80 mm extension tube you can get life size images (1:1) and it's up to you to decide whether the sharpness is acceptable.
