He said things like, "With telephone and TV it is not so much the message as the sender that is 'sent.'" The medium is the message means that the previous technology provides the material for the current one. So, film having come before television, for instance, the content of television is movies. The current technology absorbs the technology previous to it and uses it as its content. The content of television, for instance, is movies. I do not think he meant individual movies, but movies as an idea. He thought we are stuck with the solutions to yesterday's problems. One of his quotes goes: "Why is it so easy to acquire the solutions of past problems and so difficult to solve current ones?" Another: "Politics offers yesterday's answers to today's questions."
