mike_hodson
OK, I don't actually have a 30D...but I wanted to be one of the first to ask a question that will be asked 10000 times in the next year.
mike butler
On your budget, I'd have to recommend the 50mm 1.8II. Don't even think about getting one of those crappy L zooms. ;-)
trothwell
Maybe the EF 600mm, but if I had to have only one lens, the 15mm fisheye is pretty nice.
affen_kot
whatever you do, don't get an EF-S lens. they're quite stupid and dumb. allow me to present a few supporting points: 1. everyone on dpreview.com says EF-S lenses are all made of sub-standard plastic that will break after light use. 50,000 elvis fans can't be wrong. 2. the optical quality of EF-S lenses is pretty bad, too. i've never used any of them, and based on this, neither should you. 3. ...and what happens if, in 2015, when full frame dslr's are priced to move at around 1500 bucks, you want to upgrade? you're screwed. in summary, EF-S bad. no EF-S. new 17-55 2.8 IS EF-S poo poo ca ca. KenPapai
Just ONE lens? OK, the 24-70 f2.8L, failing that the 24-105 f4L IS.
mike butler
I'm starting to like Trevis' idea of the 15mm fisheye. You can always zoom with your feet.
mark u
You weren't the first to ask the question about the 30D on this forum. The answer is the same as for any other EF-S capable 1.6 crop body - just look through the previous threads for the 20D, Rebel and Rebel XT asking the same question. deselby
Affen has convinced me. Actually, since I have a 5D I'd be pretty dumb to buy any more EF-S lenses. P.S. Anybody wanna buy any EF-S lenses?
tasmania photoart
Whilst you will get good coverage with the 15mm I think the more intimate EF 600mm is the better "one" lens. Far more discreet as well.
phyrpowr
I agree on the 600mm: you won't really get many usable shots, but carry it around enough and you'll be BUFFED!
justin_goeden
You know there's a small handful of 1200mm L that canon made.i mean the price is only 5 digits but that's chump change. go with the 1200 and don't even bother with that crappy 600. mike butler
Mike, I think it's time to start at least two new threads: BEST SECOND LENS FOR MY 30D?; and WHICH SPEEDLIGHT FOR MY 30D? (is the search function case sensitive?)
trothwell
Justin: I completely agree, but it's much easier to just call up B&H and order a brand new 600mm or two than to track down a used 1200mm. Maybe this could be some new reality TV show... get a dozen photographers together, and give each of them a 30D and a 1200mm lens, and that's ALL they can use for a year, and they must do all of their photography indoors, and... :-)
pjmeade
You can zoom with your feet? What if you're in a boat?
JeffOwen
It is quite amazing that few have asked what you are going to take and how you want to present the finished product. Each to their own and in my case I have (for the 20D) the 10-22mm and the 17-85mm IS which are both S lenses. The 70-300 DO IS, 50mm f1.8 and 28mm f2.8. For general walkabout I would take the 17-85 but tend to take all 3 zooms for when I am out on vacation or general photo shooting. The 50mm f1.8 lens may be good value but as yet I have not used it. As I said each to their own.
phyrpowr
Didja see how many people treated this seriously?
mark from thailand
I'd pair it with the 20-300 f1.8 L lens I'm about to buy :)
