brian_faini
ok been using the 300d s ince it came out, i like the camera, but i amwaiting for the $$ and other issues to resolve to upgrade, in the pastfew months a major issue i have had has been the buffer is so smalland the write speed is killing me, i was under the impression that the300d didnt have the ability to write at higher speeds with the 40x,80x etc. cards. am i wrong to believe this? i have been using standard sandisk 512mb cards since i got it. anyonehave experience with the 300d and which cards write faster to clearthe buffer so you can keep on shooting.. anything is appreciated
mike dixon
Your impression is correct. No matter what the speed of the card, it takes the 300D buffer a week to clear. Well, maybe not that long, but it seemed that way, even with 50x and 80x cards.
denisgermain
it seems even worst if you are shooting RAW... doesn't feel as bad in JPG.
phule
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007-6425 The speed difference between the top 10 cards is small indicating that 1) those cards are as good as it gets and 2) the camera, not the card, is still the limiting factor. Still, I feel bad for anyone using a 4GB Hitachi Microdrive (the last one one the list)
steve_dunn2
The standard reference for CF write speeds is Galbraith's database, which shows that the 300D tops out at about 10X. The 20D and 350D both go up to roughly 40X when used with fast (e.g. 80X) cards, and somewhat less with lesser cards.

brian_faini
rob, thanks alot, well i could almost cut my time in half my card is at the bottom above the hitachi.... i had planned on going ahead and buying a sandisk pro card
bobatkins
If you look at the list the difference between the "king of the hill" superspeed, state-of-the-art card and the "bottom of the barrel" slowest card is still less than a factor of two. While a factor of (almost) two is worth having, it indicates that it's the camera that's slow, not the card.
vincent_j_m
Well, the 300D is a nice little camera and not expensive these days. I picked mine up for $450 and yes, the buffer size and write speeds are pathetic. For what it does, I've learnt to live with the limitations, and it does deliver excellent results. Guess I'll keep it till it dies, and use that as an excuse to upgrade, maybe in 2-3 years time.
