mottershead
We just deployed a new thumbnail server. About $3500 worth of hardware to make thumbnail-serving fast. It should make serving the other sizes faster too, because the servers that are doing the large sizes won't have to deal with thumbnails. I'd like to hear if anyone notices a change in the speed. It might take a little while for the caches to be populated. If there is a speed improvement, it will be most noticable in Top Rated Photos or in displaying large portfolios. Thank you, subscribers. bobatkins
TRPs are fast. So fast I don't even see them load via my DSL connection. They're just there instantly.
hilander
Seems to be loading about twice as fast as it used to for me. This is a big improvement, thanks!
a. a.
I have a really big portfolio and the speed of viewing it went at least few times faster compare to yesterday. Job well done.
colin carron
Faster by quite a noticeable amount when downloading portolio thumbnails. Well done to all involved..
jnicholson
Yep, much faster. The thumbnails in an individual's portfolio load much faster than I can reasonably look at them and scroll. That's nice.
Michael R Freeman
Much faster indeed. A SIGNIFICANT improvement on my broadband connection. Thanks - and well done!
mottershead
Say, not too shabby. The old thumbnail server didn't have enough memory. This new one has 8 Gig and 15K RPM SCSI disks. At this point, I think all the thumbnails are cached in memory and the disks are just sitting there.
sevtapisik
Great improvement. I used to avoid viewing large portfolios, now it is a pleasure. Thanks.

bennyboy
8GB - I take it the site doesn't run on Windows server then. Think I asked this before, it evades my recall. It is much faster by the way.
mottershead
A Supermicro 6014-P82 with dual 3.0GHz Xeons, 8GB DDR2 PC3200 memory, 2 73GB 15K RPM Ultra320 SCSI disks configured as a RAID 0 array using Linux Software RAID. The software is Fedora Core 4 Linux and squid 2.5. The hardware was purchased from NewEgg as a barebones chassis and we assembled it, which saved a few hundred dollars. tom t
Brian, overhere where I'm sitting (europe) it's instant. I'm on a rather fast line and TRP is like boom. Faster than CNN! Congrats with the new toy. Fedora, hunh? Good for you! It should be rock-solid in terms of stability. Tom
bennyboy
Do you guys take hardware donations? I've got some stuff that's just gathering dust here, one of the less difficult to post things (weight wise) would be an U160 RAID controller - ICP Vortex 6113RS, 128MB cache, works a charm in linux, I'd rather see it put to good use than ebay it for next to nowt. Not sure what postage from the UK would cost though :D
john falkenstine
Excellent job Brian, downloads are just zipping along. Major improvement.

daily_photograph
Not really annoying for me before - with the fastest connection available (Europe) - it needs 1/3 of the time now. What means you cant scroll fast enough to follow the thumbnails :-))
