90mm Summicron ASPH M vs. 75mm Summilux M

Recommended Posts

I am going to buy one these but I am not yet sure which. Any advice

would be appreciated.

I don't shoot many portraits and I'm really into low-light

photography. I usually shoot Tri-X 400 and sometimes color 100 films.

I understand the 75 is a little soft wide open but in a

painterly/narrow-DoF way. I enjoy this look quite a lot (I also own a

Noctilux.) I am wondering if I would be able to achieve good results

in this style with the 90 wide open. From what I have read, the 90

ASPH is a very sharp lens but does it have particurly distinct

bokeh/wide aperture appeal?

Can't fully answer your question. I have the 90 pre-Asph Summicron and the 75 Summilux. Wide open, the 75 is sharper than the 90. I have heard that the 90 ASPH-APO is much better. I actually keep thinking of selling the 75 and 90 and buying a 90 Asph as I do not use the 75 much but I never seem able to part with it. I would part with the 90 without hesitation. It is a good lens but just not quite as sharp wide open as I want.

Unless you can't stomach the thought of being seen with an <$1000 lens, figure the non-APO 90 Summicron into the mix. With all 3 wide open, it's closer to the character of the 75 Summilux than the APO.

Summilux 75

Tried this one when asking myself the same question. Ended up not getting it and going for the 90 Summilux. By the way, the BG here is a cluttered shower, with tiled walls... Would have to dig a little for a 90mm sample, but the extra focal length goes some way to make up for the lesser aperture in terms of DOF.

Focusing the 75mm wide open is a bit of a bear, particularly on a 0.72
