CANON 1D MKII N HIGH ISO

Hi, I am searching for a substitute for my beloved Canon 10D. I use

it for taking pictures in concerts and I was doubting between the new

Canon 5D and the 1D MKII N. I am tempted to buy the 1D because of

shutter durability, better AF system in low light, and, perhaps,

better metering, but I would want to see some samples using high

ISOs. I must use ISO 1600 a lot of times and I need to know how the

camera delivers. I will appreciate a lot if you can drive me to some

samples taken with this camera in ISO 1600.

I can't really point you to a sample of a full resolution shot at ISO 1600, but coming from a

10D and having bought a 1D-MKII 5 months ago to substitute it I can tell you that the 1D

looks a lot "cleaner" in 1600 than the 10D. It doesn't necessarily have a lot less noise than

the 10D, but it looks more natural (no blue pixels in the middle of a black background), more

film-like.

Re shutter durability - it ain't necessarily so - mine blew at 48,000 shots and nobody said sorry - in fact Canon (UK) didn't even acknowledge my complaint.

I have 110,000+ shots on my 1D, just bought a MKII N (waiting on UPS now in fact)and have heard of no problems with shutter failure being a problem on 1D's....CPS said they should last past the 200,000. Occasionally things fail, one, two or 10 in 10,000 isn't bad....

 

As for noise, the 1D is much better than the 10D, but it also depends on the background...concerts shouldn't be a problem at all.

Sorry to hear about that. It is a pity that a lot of companies never accept their responsibility when there is a problem in a specific sample. Too bad!

 

Anyway, thanks to the other fellows that explain that noise is more natural in the 1D Mark II N, comparing to the 10D. I think 8 MP is enough for me (I have enlarged 10D (6 MP) images to 30 x 45 cm in ISO 1600 as they can be shown in exhibitions (you see the noise but all the people say that the overall impression is that the pictures are very clear and with a lot of detail). If the impression of 1D MK II N images is of better quality, this is enough for me. I checked the 5D in a image fair in Barcelona and I was not impressed by it (taking into account its price) I prefer to pay a little more and have a real workhorse. You know, I am very happy with my 10 D, but its shutter is 34,000 cycles old and I think it is time to jump to a more capable camera (in terms in autofocus, for example, that I find very limited for my kind of work)And I fear that the 5 D autofocus could be just a marginal improvement over the 10 D.

 

Anyway, if someone could show me a 1 D Mk II N image at ISO 1600 it would help to my peace of mind :-)

The 1D has slightly better performance with short exposures, but long exposures with the

1D suck compared to the 10D.

It sucks I just used high ISO for a wedding and they suck! 5 grand for a camrea that can not handel high ISOs

You're wrong, it does not 'suck.' You just don't know what you're doing. Part of it is post-processing with your software to lessen the high ISO noise. I thought your camera has been broken for a month anyway? Even a 10D at ISO 800 is way passable for pro work. A 1DMk2N at ISO 1600 will work well, just be patient and LEARN.
