ron_morales
Hoping for some insight to the pros/cons if using one shot developer and possibly how well does it compare to D76? Thank you Ron
stephen hazelton
When I've used D76 in the past, I used IT as a 1-shot developer. The 1-shot route is better if you do small quantities of film, or use different developers.
jay ott
One shot developers have the advantage of consistency. If you reuse any developer it gets exhausted over time so it becomes necessary to either extend development time or to replenish it.<p> D76 can be used as a one shot also. Just throw it out after one session. Most people use dilute D76 1:1 and throw it away.
roger_hicks1
Dear Ron, Consistency. Otherwise you're only guessing how much you need to extend dev times. Also, film speed. Bromide build up wipes off more and more toe speed until in a fully seasoned (replenished, long-term-use) dev you can lose the best part of a stop. Cheers, Roger
chris_waller
As stated above, consistency. I use Rodinal which is a one-shot developer. It's one less variable to worry about. I don't want to be bothered with replenishment or adjusting development times.
eric merrill
Aside from consistency, using 1-shot chemicals avoids contamination, too. Then again, that plays back into consistency. Eric
mikeseb
Add my vote to the one-shot crowd for all the above reasons, no matter what if any dilution you choose. Chemicals are just too cheap to be penny wise and dollar/pound/euro foolish over. I'd one-shot mine even if my Jobo didn't require it!
battra92
Well outside of the usual consistancy everyone is saying, I'd say that it allows for more freedom. I mean, I use HC-110 dil. B almost exclusively and I always know it's good.
patrick_gainer
Consistency is a good reason if it really is consistent. With HC110 or Rodinal, you're pretty sure. Some developers can self destruct over time. I'm pretty sure with my PC-Glycol and PQ-Glycol stocks. Some say you should divide the stock into a number of small, full bottles withone dose in each bottle. However, some years ago I used a PQ-sulfite developer of my own design that was self replenishing for at least 10 rolls per quart. It got to looking pretty ugly after a while, but still worked. It got too ugly for me to trust before it ever went dead.
