Canon 10D exposure compensation

I have a Canon EOS 10D and am getting pretty good at using it. But for

the sirt time recently I have needed to think about exposure

compensation and I cannot find how to control that on the camera. I

have found the flash exposure compensation button but cannot work out

exactly how to use the regular exposure compensation feature. Can

someone please point me to detailed instructions on how to do this. I

would be very grateful.

....I'm a relative newcomer also to DSLR's and (like flash exposure compensation) would think that exposure compensation you should be able to over or under expose by a certain amount - whenever I alter the exposure compensation it just changes the shutter speed up or down - so all you get is 'correct' exposure with a different shutter speed (giving a different depth of field)...

David, I think you're confusing selecting a shutter speed with applying compensation. I think you are shooting in either P Mode or one of the Basic zones.

It depends which mode you are shooting in.

In Tv which is shutter priority then it is the aperture that changes with compensation (which changes depth of field).

In Av which is shutter priority then it is the shutter speed that changes with compensation (which DOESN'T changes depth of field).

In M which is manual, there is no exposure compensation as you are selecting your own exposure parameters.

David,

You're not altering the exposure compensation, you're just altering the exposure. If you're doing this in P, Tv, or Av modes the camera will calculate to give you an equivalent exposure based on the new values you've set.

...all very well but as I see it... with FLASH exposure compensation you can increase or decrease the amount of flash without affecting any aperture or shutter settings... with Exposure compensation (in AV or P) you turn it up and it puts the shutter speed down (or turn it down and it puts the shuuter speed up).... Only in TV mode does the shutter stay fixed and then you can alter exposure to suit. In M mode you have Full control.... But as I see it - in P or AV it doesn't really do what I think the original opening question queried....?
