scott_lewis3
In just under 2 week is the Annual Jim Clark revival. Im looking forward to it and have a little experience photographing motor sport. But any tips would be greatly appreciated. I attempted panning last year at a few events with some success. http://www.jimclark-revival.com/en/home/
brent chadwell
Use an IS lens set to mode 2 (for panning). Use a shutter around 1/2000, just bump up ISO if necessary. A monopod helps a lot with panning, as it keeps the camera level vertically, and you just have to worry about the horizontal panning. Setting up on a corner rather than a straight also helps, because you can get the cars going a lot slower. You are talking about a speed difference of 50-75mph in the corners. Hope this helps. mark newcombe www.mcnphoto
Looks like a big event, should be fun. Look for a tight corner where you could get some wheel lift. Mix it up panned, front on, rear on etc. Shot a little loose and crop is also helpful at times. Regards Mark<div></div>
discpad
Don't forget to get people shots, especially of drivers talking with their hands to their crew chief or owner. Also, don't zoom in too tight, so you can put the context of the track into perspective: One of the problems with (especially Formula 1) racing photos you see is that they are zoomed in so tight, you can't tell which track it was shot at! Take a look at one gallery I posted in & around: http://users.snip.net/~joe/05dover/pages/DSCF1545a.htm and you'll see other trucks steering around the wreck, as well as the enclosed grandstands, which screams "Monster Mile!"
