paul_viapiano
That's dust. Make sure you get a bulb blower and carefully and painstakingly blow the dust off the negative.

john_shriver
Better scanner. Flatbed scanners are just toys for 35mm film, you will need a film scanner. The noise in the highlights are the densest areas of the negative, and your scanner doesn't have the sensitivity to render dense areas without noise. It's mostly a Nikon CoolScan monopoly now, with the exit of Konica/Minolta from the market. There is also Noise Ninja, but it's silly to use that against scanner noise, rather than real film grain... paul_viapiano
Ali, Do you mean teh white spots and hair-like white marks on the scan?
robert goldstein
Does your scanner have digital ICE? If so, use it to eliminate dust from the scans. If not, you may be able to find software approaches to dust removal; or simply become very familiar with the healing brush tool in Photoshop. robert goldstein
Digital ICE is a method of dust removal that uses infrared light. From your question, Ali, I gather that it is not available on your scanner. There are software methods of removing dust, but I cannot make any specific recommendations on them. Probably a search of the photo.net archives will produce some results.
