anish
hello, Can someone direct me to a good link or two that can explain to me how to use the flash on my Elan 7? I just upgraded from a Rebel 2000, and it looks like i have a more capable flash than before. Trouble is, I don't really know how to use it effectively. I am mostly interested in using it to add fill in landscape shots. Any direction is appreciated... -Anish
phule
You'd be better served by buying the 420EX flash unit. Here's the best resource for Canon flash photography: http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/
mark u
I'll assume you can read the manual to work out how to access features such as flash exposure compensation and second curtain sync. You should also read the flash bible at: http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/ Some specific points about what you have in mind, though. The flash isn't very powerful, and the camera is limited to a maximum sync speed of 1/125th when using it. This means that in full sunshine you'd be using an aperture of about f/16 to get a useable shutter speed with 100 ISO film (probably a good idea anyway if you want your landscape and the foreground to be sharp). However, at f/16 the effective flash range for light fill is only about 1.5m/5 ft, so you might want to consider getting a more powerful flash. anish
I tried a particular shot of a Bristlecone Pine over the weekend that I now know is not going to turn out right. I did use f16 since i knew the max sync speed was 1/125 sec. The tree, though, was at least 10 feet away, so I guess the flash will not have reached. I just may need to get an external flash. The link looks extremely useful. I'm looking ahead to digging into it. Thanks again, -Anish
