harvey_trautenberg1
I have obtained a very nice IIIg which i will utilize sparingly. I have a few M's with various lenses but not too much LTM equiptment anymore. I have a 50mm collapsible 2.8 elmar as well as a 50mm 1.8 Canon and a few CV lenses. What is the best 50mm to mate up with the IIIg, contemporary to its era? The Summiflex is just to pricey though. Thanks HT
harvey_trautenberg1
I meant Summilux is too pricey.
awahlster
You pretty much already have them. Unless you want new or much more expensive. In Canon the later black 50mm f1.4 would be a step up from your f1.8 Expect to pay upwards of $450.00 for a nice one. In Leica the 50mm f2.0 Summicron (depending on sample condition) Might be better then your Elmar but it won't be much if your Elmar is in good condition and tune. For new stuff check out Camera Quest and the VC offerings. By the way my IIIg was bought new with the f2.8 Elmar. I sold the body but kept the lens to use on my Canon RF's
al_kaplan1
The 50/1.8 Canon is hard to beat. The 50/1.4 Nikkor is excellent also. Leitz glass from that era tends to have softer coatings and glass than the Japanes competition so you'r more likely to find a Canon or Nikkor with clean glass. Troll
I've had two IIIg's and both "came with" the 2.8 Elmar.
awahlster
Bill I think that the IIIg std. lens at the time was pretty much the f2.8 Elmar I have run into quite a few that came that way.
wendell_kelly
I'm using a 50mm/f2 Nikon on mine and it is (no surprise) a fine, compact lens. The f1.8 Canon is also good optically but uses a difficult to find filter thread. This can be a real nuisance when looking for filters or a screw in lens hood. pensacolaphoto
I use both a 50/2 Nikkor and a Canon 50/1.8. Both are sharp lenses with medium contrast. The Canon 50/2.8 is a less expensive option. It also is a good lens. I use it sparingly as I have the faster lenses. Note that the 50/2 Nikkor and 50/1.8 Canon lenses are rather heavy. pensacolaphoto
I guess, my suggestion is to stay with your Canon 50/1.8 lens.
Rob F.
It might be nice to add a 90, when you get around to it, since the IIIg has finder markers for one. The Elmar, Elmarit, and Summicron were all available in LTM.
john_shriver
Well, the other lens "made" for the IIIg is the LTM rigid Summicron. A pricey collectible in it's own right. Certainly more pricey than a LTM Summilux.
harvey_trautenberg1
Thanks for all the input. The elmar is the contemporary choice. I look forward to comparing the Canon eo it. I have 90 elmar but I have other preferences when I use that focal legnth.
