Spearhead
Some of these would be considered "straight" sports photos. I'mworking on a number of projects that may include some of the ones inthis presentation, including a documentary one on kickboxing in theSan Francisco/San Jose area, along with a writer who used some of my photos in an article on the fighter who appears in the first few shots here.
Saturday Night Fights
These were shot at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, fantastic lighting. michaelging
Jeff ,Nice photos and you are right that is beautiful rim lighting. It's too bad they don't allow smoking in boxing arena's anymore. There were very few things that gave the harsh yet soft light of a smokey boxing ring.Is that a young Al Kaplan in the dark trunks. Uhooru
Very nice Jeff. Eric's favorite is also mine but I also like b134 and f17 very much.

ray .
What a scene. Down to the basics. Kicking the other guy's ass for your own survival. Just saw 'Cinderella Man' last night. Boxing is an endless source...
anthony yates
Jeff, I really like the B&W's. They seem to capture the essence of the physical contest. I think it is because the eye is less distracted by the bright colours of the advertising.

john_sidlo
You can use photography to all kinds of ends, but this series seems to me to be, as Norm put it well, capturing images of something people do. The images are all dramatic, especially (and in no particular order) f25, f26, f11, f1, b118, f31 and f17.

Congratulations on a well-done and riveting series, Jeff. Your talent and skill are in evidence.
matt_m__toronto_
claudia, why do you think the sport is so barbaric? i just shot a doc on muay thai, and there's some fascinating culture and history to this. good offence is knowing good defence and protecting yourself. barefoot
In my opinion the fight shots are dull, the shots of the boxers on their own are an improvement but the only image that has any photographic merit in a documentary sense, and , therefore, worthy of posting on this forum, is xcrowd2. mattalofs
No matter what folks think of the subject, man that's some great light. I particularly like this one
michael s.
The light helped, but the photographer did his job ... and then some. Good work, Jeff, on the action shots and the others.
Allen Herbert
What I like about my mate Jiffras is that he bubbles with photographic enthusiasm This is reflected in the quality of his images. Thanks for sharing, Jeff.
