eimages
Hi everyone, I have been using a black background for a while, and I wanted to get opinions from other portrait photographers what color backgrounds are the best for portraits in black and white work. I would especialy like your thought on background color vs. skin color and hair color. Thank you in advance, Alex

beauh44
Like Mike, I'm no authority but high-key shots on white backgrounds are nice for B&W. Here's a high-key shot I did with a hotlight as opposed to flash: http://www.photo.net/photo/4473295 I really like the catchlights that hotlights produce in the subject's eyes. And since they're going to be B&W's I'm not too bothered by getting color temperature just right.
vet 57
For monochrome portraiture a mid grey is very useful, you can vary the tone of it depending on how much light is on it and how far the sitter is from it.
