teelions
I am going to shadow my nephew on his last day at college leading up to his graduation this weekend. I plan to takebackground shots of the campus as well as pictures with he with his friends and shots inside his dorm room. Sort of like a wedding (getting ready, friends & family, ceremony). My gift for him will be a DVD slide show of this day. I want to pack just two lenses on my Think Tank belt. So which would you suggest? This is what I have for my Nikon system: 18-70 3.5/5.6, 35-70 2.8 macro, 24-120 3.5/5.5 VR, 70-200 2.8 VR, and (cheap) 70-300 4/5.6. I'll be bring the SB-800 and lots of batteries and cards as well. Thanks for your input.
j_c38
24-120 would be a great lens if thats the only one you want to take. Being you want to take two, I would go with the 18-70 and the 70-200. You will need that wide angle for the dorm room shots. Its not the fastest, but much wider then the 35. You'll definetly want the 70-200 for candids. You don't want to litterly be his shadow all day. Jochen_S
O.K. the 70-300 is surely out (- why do you keep it at all?). You'll need as wide as possible too (I'd probably miss something 14 or less mm). I haven't seen no shootout between these 3 zooms covering 35-70. - Get the best (sharpest) available light performer too. My DSLR kit almost ends at 135mm, so I don't know if I'd take the 70-200 outdoors, but performance rules... Bring some monopod. Handholding or flashing during lectures doesn't sound great... lovcom_photo
I don't know the specifics of the venue, but if you had a prime I would just take one lens...a prime....35mm F1.4 (Nikon does make one right?), and/or the 50mm F1.4 I suspect that would be all you need....bring the flash too, and for indoor shots.
