Karim Ghantous
I'm wondering if anyone can suggest some apps that clean up recordings made fromrecords such as LPs and 78s. Most urgently I need stuff for OS X right now. Butsuggestions for Linux and Windows would be appreciated. Ideally it should befree software but as long as I find something it's a start. There's a documentary I'm working on and our music is going to be taken from 78sthat are now in the public domain. One of my tasks is to sample the 78s onto acomputer and not all of these things are in pristine condition. Now I'm not totally sure about some of our 78 discs as to their PD status. Ifanyone can point to a list on-line that can verify their status that would help(although this isn't as urgent as I'm getting some help there anyway). I'm awarethat all Edison Diamond recordings are PD but it's not so simple after that.
MichaelChang
Audacity is a comprehensive audio editor, free, and has versions for all three OS platforms. I'm not sure how effective the built-in (click-pop-noise) filters are on 78s, but might be worth a try.
eric_perlberg
This won't be too useful because I can't find the link in my bookmarks (useful to bookmark but after awhile counter productive sadly) but there is a freeware open source sound cleaner I came across last week designed to take clicks and pops out of old records after digitising them. Try searching clicks and pops. If I can find the link I'll post it. If you feel like paying there's Bias's SoundSoap and SoundSoap Pro. And this article.
eric_perlberg
Ooops, wasn't open-source, it just had that look about it... It's here. $25.
