Jochen_S
I just used a Latin online dictionary saying "summa" = highest part (like mountain top) and "superus superior supremus or summus : above, upper, high." - Digging deeply into grammar would give me a headache, but at the time these lenses came out the boys with the deep enough pockets had learned Latin at school, probably even Greek, so names like Thambar where half understandable too. dan_fromm2
Scott, amend "insecure and neurotic" to "stupidly pretentious." Do you feel better now?
john_graham3
"I've always assumed it was (frenetically)sum-me-cron but whilst talking to Malcolm Taylor (who's repaired my water damaged M2 and I should have it back next week!) today, he referred to my 40mm as a (frenetically)" Try Prozac, it'll help you both to be less frenetic. socke
Carsten, have you had more than five hits on your pronounciation? Seems my pronounciation didn't raise much interest ;-)
pc_b
Wonderful thread, just got myself a beer out of the fridge! Carsten does have a truly TADELLOSE pronounciation. All I can add is that Summicron (consisting of summ(i) + cron) could be understood as Best/Greatest of Color (Creators/Gatherers/whatever): summ(i) has already been nicely translated and Cron (not 'Kron') is Greek for color. Remember 'c(h)roma noise'?Lux is Latin/Greek for light which makes Summiluxes something like the Greatest Light Gatherers. So, where's that sirloin steak of mine again?!?Cheers, Peter
cabophoto
Volker, I don't have a counter, but within the thread there was almost no response.... Carsten
cabophoto
PC B, the earliest samples of the collapsible 50/2 Summicron were labeled 'Summikron'. Carsten

icuneko
For English speakers: Think of summi- as akin to summit and -cron as akin to chrome. Thus, you have the summit or peak of color reproduction.
