What is the widest angle lens for the 8x10 w/o clipping!

Hello Fellow Camera Nuts,

<br><br>

For some time now I have been looking for the optimum wide angle for

my 8x10 field camera. I have a few lenses that will <i>"just"</i> make

the corners, or have a few millimeters of clipping. What I would like

to know is;

<br><br>

"How wide can one go and still keep room for moderate corrective

movements?"

<br><br>

Please keep in mind that I am not thinking of a fish-eye lens but

rather a lens with a little room for working (similar to a 35mm on a

35mm)? ? ?

<br><br>

Thank You, Paul

Obviously, this answer is totally subjective because "moderate corrective movements" isn't really quantifiable.<p/>

I have a 120 Nikkor SW that, like you said, "just makes the corners". It's the equiv of 17mm on 35mm. I would use it only if I knew that either the corners didn't matter, or that the movement I need wasn't very much. So that's not a good candidate--and that's about as wide as you can get on an 8x10.<p/>

I have a Fuji 240-A that seems to work pretty well in the range you're talking about (33mm equiv of 35mm)--I can't crank the front tilt to its max, but I can get some "moderate corrective movement", enough for me anyhow. The image circle is 336mm. You can get much bigger circles if you go with the Rodenstock APO Sironar-S (372mm), but then you've just quadrupled your lens weight and tripled your price for not an equivalent change in sharpness or value, IMO...Depends on what's important to you. :)<p/>

With moderate movements, Schneider's 150mm Super Symmar XL.

For straight on and no movements, Schneider's 110mm Super Symmar XL.

For something similar to a 35mm lens on a 35mm camera, there are LOADS of 240mm-250mm lenses that'll fit the bill and provide ACRES of room for movement (OK, so I exaggerate, but only a little :-) Short list: Schneider 240 GCLaron, Kodak 250 Wide Field Ektar, Fuji 250 f/6.7.

<p>Probably the widest, easily available lens that covers 8x10 is the 110 Super-Symmar-XL. But you want "moderate corrective movements" -- you could use the 110 SS-XL with movements such as back tilt, but if you want to use rise, shift or front tilts, move coverage would be needed. In modern lenses, the 150 Nikkor-SW, 155 Grandagon, or 150 mm Super-Symmar-XL might be give you what you want. If you want more coverage, then perhaps the 165 mm Super-Angulon, or a 200 or 210 mm wide-coverage lens.</p>

<p>But you also indicate that you want something "similar to a 35mm on a 35mm". Does that mean you want the same view that a 35 mm lens gives on 35 mm? If so, the ratio of the long dimensions of the films, 250 / 36 mm, gives the equivalent focal length as 240 mm. In this focal length there are many possibilities. Any 240 mm plasmat will cover 8x10; some have more coverage and will allow larger movements.</p>

<b>First off I wish to say Thank You to all.</b>

<i><b>I had no idea one can get close to the "fisheye" wide angles on an 8x10. . .</b></i>

Dan, Hello again, I'm back. Wanted to say the Blue Face 160mm Pro Raptar has proven to be an absolute gem with wonderful contrast and detail. By far one of my top shelf favorites. Also, just got a 270mm APO Red Dot Artar which is rapidly pushing aside a few of my other older lenses in many ways!!! Seems to be another rare gem that shines in the light. Using it on my 5x7 field along with the Raptar. Together they make for a wonderful & light kit. Hope to talk with you again soon.

Thank You Everyone for the great details now I need to hunt. Paul
